FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Students aged 14.5-17 will be eligible to receive a North Carolina Learner’s Permit once they have completed our program. Upon completion of the course, students will receive a 611 Certificate of Completion. Students that take the classroom and driving portion separately will additionally receive a 611A Certificate (One for classroom, one for driving). These certificates do not expire.
The students’ parent will then take their Certificate of Completion to their general education school to receive a Driving Eligibility Certificate, which confirms that the student is currently enrolled in school and is working towards a high school diploma. This certificate expires in 30 days, so plan accordingly! Online and home schooled students can receive the form by visiting the Division of Non-Public Instruction (DNPE) website, logging into their portal, and clicking on “Request a Driver’s Eligibility Certificate”.
Students can then receive a North Carolina Learner’s Permit by bringing their Certificate(s) of Completion, Driving Eligibility Certificate, birth certificate, and social security card (or document proving they have a social security number) to any North Carolina DMV, and passing the written exam.

Students looking to receive a learner’s permit will have to complete a 25-question computer knowledge exam, in which the student will need to answer 20 questions correctly to pass. To our knowledge, the exam is fully multiple choice, contains no diagrams/pictures, and will end as soon as the student answers their 20th correct question, or their 6th incorrect question. This means that it is in the best interest of the student to skip questions they’re not sure about, seeing as they may get 20 answers correct before they even have to return to that question.
Alongside the knowledge exam, students seeking a permit will also complete a “Signs Test” in which the student is presented a series of road signs where they must identify the sign by its shape, color, and meaning, explaining what each sign indicates to drivers.
Lastly, students will complete a required vision screening before receiving their permit, so be sure to bring glasses or contacts if applicable!

Students will need to complete the North Carolina Road Test to receive their license. Non-permitted students will also need to complete the written exam as well (See above question).
On the road test, students will be asked to perform a variety of maneuvers such as a three-point turn, reversing in a straight line, and a quick “emergency” stop. The road test generally only takes a few minutes to complete. Students will not be asked to parallel park or drive on the freeway during their road test.
For more information regarding the driving exam including exact test routes for many local DMV locations, students can enroll in our adult/teen driving lessons program for extensive practice and preparation for their road exam.
Short Answer: About a 30-45 days between the first meeting and the receiving of the Certificate of Completion.
We understand that the driver’s ed process at some public schools can take multiple months to complete. Skyline Driving School is committed to offering an alternative with a much quicker turnaround time. The classroom portion of the program generally takes place over 3 back-to-back weekends, with the parent meeting taking place on the first weekend, and instruction taking place on the second and third weekends. See Class Schedules page for details. The driving portion of the program commences as soon as the classroom portion is completed with a goal of having every student receive their certificate 30 days after the last day of class.
For permitted students enrolling in our Adult/Teen Lessons program, instructors are available to schedule those lesson within 1-2 weeks of enrollment.
For students who have completed the classroom elsewhere enrolling in our Drive-Only program, Skyline will need to contact the previous school to receive the student’s forms before they drive with us, which generally takes about 1-2 weeks depending on the school. Scheduling is available soon after, giving a turnaround time of about 3-4 weeks after enrollment.
Skyline Driving School’s driving sessions are entirely 1-on-1 instruction. We believe this is the best environment for our students to learn effectively, and for our instructors to coach effectively without any unnecessary distractions coming from the back seat. Skyline may be open to exceptions to this rule in rare cases.
We understand that some parents may want to ensure the comfort and safety of their student during their lessons. Skyline plans to implement dash cameras in all of it’s vehicles, used to both capture examples of situations students may encounter on the roads, and monitor instructor performance. All of Skyline’s instructors are fully certified by the North Carolina DMV, and are well regarded by students for their calmness, patience, and professionalism.
Skyline Driving School does not “fail” students, as they will not be asked to take a “final exam” at the end of our course. Throughout our course, students will be given all the tools they need in order to become safe and responsible drivers, and pass their permit and license exams.
Essentially, as long as the student is present and non-disruptive for the 30 hours of online classroom instruction, and completes the 6-hour driving portion, they will receive a Certificate of Completion from us and be eligible to get their learner’s permit!
Students enrolled in our full program will experience all types of roads during their lessons. Generally starting in the neighborhood while learning the basics, students will graduate to country roads, multi-lane business roads, city streets, open freeways, and more, while navigating all types of intersections.
While exact routes can vary depending on student location and instructor preference, students living in Raleigh can generally expect to get practice driving on I-440, I-540, I-40, Capital Blvd, Glenwood Ave, Creedmoor Rd, Edwards Mill Rd, Hillsborough St, Tryon Rd, Downtown Raleigh, Maynard Rd in Cary, and more.
Students may also request to receive practice driving to locations they will frequent once they get their permit/license such as work, school, or family members’ houses. This is common with our private Adult/Teen lessons, where students receive a more personalized experience based on their situation and what they hope to receive from the driving sessions.
As much as we would love to be able to, Skyline Driving School cannot guarantee that students who have completed our course will pass their permit or license exam. We strive to provide all students with the knowledge and tools needed to pass their exams and to excel as safe and responsible drivers, however it is ultimately up to the student to perform on their DMV exams.
Many of our students have little to zero experience behind-the-wheel. Skyline understands that nobody can be an absolutely perfect driver, especially after a limited 6 hours of experience. We also understand that everyone learns and improves at different rates. That is why we aim for the goal of giving our students the knowledge, confidence, and skills needed to be able to drive with their parents/family once they receive their permit. We want parents to be comfortable in the passenger seat, knowing that while the student’s skill may be a bit raw, Skyline has brought them up to a standard where they can be relaxed while assisting the student through the rest of their driving journey.
